The U.S. Treasury owes Americans nearly $17 Billion in unredeemed Series E Savings Bongs. Sold form 1941 until 1980, the bonds were marketed initially as a way to show patriotism during W.W. II and later as a safe way to invest. But many people have lost or forgotten about these bonds purchased generations ago.
Now, some lawmakers and government officials are trying to Help Citizens Get Their Money Back! Maybe You're one of those lucky citizens?
To find out whether you might Own a Series E Bond (either directly or indirectly) purchased After 1973, go to; http://www.treasurydirect.gov/ and enter the Social Security number into the Treasury Hunt funciton. It takes just a few seconds and it's Free, so try it today! Maybe your friend, co-worker or a relative might have a hidden financial windfall they don't know about? So Please do forward this Blog (and comment to let me know if you had any luck) to your contacts - who knows, maybe one of them "comes into a chunk of cash", and they'll remember You sent them This Blog Post by Reciprocating with a nice gift or fancy dinner?
If you think you might own a bond issued Prior to 1974, confirmation is a lot more difficult, but not impossible to research. Records linking older bonds with their owners are maintained on microfilm, which can only be searched manually by the Bureau of Public Debt personnel. All you'd have to do is give them a call and request they perform the search. This process can be slow and not as successful as the website shown above, for post 1973 bonds purchased.
